Fall Ennui
By Adrien
It’s happened. Fall is here and I am miserable. I know I’m in the minority here, but I am happiest and feel best when it’s warm and sunny, day in and day out. Now it’s dark when I wake up and dark when I get home and the weather has been cold and rainy off and on for more than a week and I am not happy. I dread winter.
Last Tuesday there was a break in the weather and it was an unexpectedly gorgeous day, so I rushed home after work and my husband and I went out for a quick after-work ride. It was fantastic, but probably the last one, as it was dark on the ride home and we’d only been out for an hour. Boo.
What this means for my workouts is the end to long after-work rides and a renewed dedication to weight lifting. I’ve been slacking on the weight training for the past couple of months, maybe getting in two half-assed sessions a week and not really following a program – just sort of doing what I feel like. This is a bad plan because it means I skip the exercises I find difficult (assisted chin ups, push ups, Bulgarian split squats, step ups, lateral anything) and do the moves that I already feel pretty comfortable with: back squats, deadlifts, rows, chest press, shoulder press. So, I’m basically hitting everything, but I’m not terribly focused or really pushing myself to improve.
So, what now? I’ve already done New Rules of Lifting for Women, and Female Body Breakthrough. I usually go back to my standby, Power Training, but I feel like maybe it’s time for a new challenge. Anyone have a weight lifting program to recommend? (I should add: I cannot do Crossfit for a number of reasons, so that’s out.)
