i <3 smartwool as well. though i live in california, so i don't have to bundle up quite as much. i have been working on breaking in my vibram five fingers, so i carry my old running shoes with me, and change midway through my runs. my smartwool socks are HEAVENLY on my ice cold feet when i change!

i also have a problem with my bum and backs of my legs being cold, what a great idea to wear men's boxers under running tights!

I live in Michigan, so I deal with this about 5 months of the year. One thing that really worked for me was to get a pair of mens SmartWool boxer briefs to wear under my warmest running tights. It provides an extra layer for the dreaded ass-freeze. I also like SmartWool socks (no, I don't work for them, I swear!), and definitely try mittens rather than gloves - your fingers can use the "buddy system" to stay warm.

I live in NC as well and did a lot of outdoor running last winter. I found that if my extremities were warm, I was warm. A good pair of gloves, a hat and thicker socks (I wear Zulu socks). I also decided to break down and spend the money on some good outerwear and it made all the difference. I swear by the Mizuno heat gear winderbreaker and half-zip pullover. Good luck with your training!
