Changes

By Wendy

I feel like I am finally coming up for air after a busy holiday season and a new year that started with some big questions about what 2011 was going to hold for me.

I hinted at some big changes in my last post and I can finally fess up: I start a new job next month. Not just any new job…a dream job, a big job, a job that when I think about it fills me with an equal mixture of excitement and terror.

Obviously I’m excited about the job. It is more pay and more responsibility, two things that I like an awful lot. But mixed in with the excitement is the knowledge that this is going to be a big shake up for my personal life. Currently my husband and I work at the same place so we carpool. We work about 8-4:30pm and I have flexibility during the day to workout at the on-site fitness center and pool. In the new job I’ll work longer hours and will be in a different city than my husband, so no more car pooling. I don’t know yet if there is a fitness center at or near the new job. I don’t know yet if I’ll have the flexibility to work out over my lunch hour. I’m going to have to be a lot more intentional about scheduling training sessions.

I feel like this is a good time to reassess my fitness goals. While I love racing, I think this year I want to focus more on building a solid base of training and doing a few carefully selected races instead of shooting for a race every month or every other month. In 2010 I ended up doing five races (two sprint tris, one open water swim, one 5K, and one six hour race) but I only did 169 miles of running, 143 miles of cycling, 21 miles of swimming and a paltry 11 sessions of strength training for the whole year. That is just not enough!

My goals for this year:

500 miles cycling

400 miles running

50 miles of swimming

100 sessions of strength training.

Ambitious, but doable.

Now I just need to figure where I’m going to swim in the dead of winter in Iowa…

Yay for your new job! Is there a local Y? Thats where I swam once. (I got so sick after, I never went back but it could totally be unrelated and I just mentally equate the two in my head)
